We Have Reached "Summit Beer"

The White House held the most talked about summit in the beer-world today. Labeled the "Beer Summit" by most of the press, Obama, Gates and Crowley shared a frothy beverage while settling the matter that happened in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The great thing about all of this is that nobody wants to know what the three men will talk about. All I have been reading is the question, "What beer will they be drinking." Becks, Budweiser, Red Stripe, Blue Moon... this is major decision time.

Personally, I think this is a little ridiculous. It seems there is as much, or more, coverage about the "Beer Summit" as health care, the Iraq timeline and the economy. Somehow we are more entranced with Beer selection and the death of a guy who turned his life in to a play land while dangling his kids out of a window. But I guess I must comment on it, having a beer blog and all.

Gate's selection: Red Stripe. Hooray Beer! This lager coming in a well marketed "stubbie" bottle is for those who like to pay too much for a beer that is basically like Budweiser. Consumers buy it because they like to drink an "Import." Because everybody knows that the best beers come from Jamaica. I'll drink it on a beach in Jamaica, that's about it.

Crowley's selection: Blue Moon. Hooray that he is the only one with a palate. I actually like this beer. But usually, I'll go for something else if it's available. The Coors people did a good job with this Belgian Wit style, I just like to support the craft brewers when possible.

Obama's selection: Bud Light. Hooray for Belgian-Brazilians who took over our American made beer empire. This sort of saddens me. As the leader of the United States, he could have made a big statement by drinking from an American-owned craft brewery. Dogfish head and Clipper City are a couple of D.C. area locals who would have really enjoyed the press.

Now, Obama is claiming that this is not a "Beer Summit," but just three guys having a beer. Well how do you explain that incredibly real photo I have posted?

You sure about that?

Ok, the news makes more comments on these things than important stuff. Do we really need 3 news stations with 24 hour coverage about Michael Jackson?

I agree with you that we don't need it. However, to stay alive as a news medium you have to give the people what they want. If you do not, they will find their "news" other places (the death of newspapers). The problem is that the people who voted for Obama care more about his "rock star" persona and every little thing he does than they do the issues.

It is silly that this story has gotten so much coverage. If Obama had said nothing then this story would have fizzled out but he chose to make a public statement about an issue where he admittedly did not know all the facts and was biased. That is what the real story should be; his reckless behavior in this situation.

To make a long post even longer, the media should be focusing on the Cash for Clunkers program that the government misread, is now suspending and how we should be fearful of them treating healthcare with the same lack of foresight.

I appreciate the blog and your unique perspective on all issues beer. Keep it up!

I heard Gates had a Sam Adams light. Makes sense, he's from the Boston area. But why didn't the blue collar cop have a Sam Adams? No, he put fruit in his beer. something doesn't add up there.

Obama could not win on his selection. Had he chosen a craft beer, he would have been accoused of being elitist again. he chooses Miller then he's South African. he chooses Budweiser then he's Belgium-Brazilian. He chooses Coors, then he's a socialist.

the selection says a lot for the simple fact that everyone reads into it. He went with the safe bet: the number 1 selling beer in America and from the mid-west.

Craig, I agree by and large with you about the attention the media gave to this story whereas they could be focusing attention elsewhere.

Do we know what Biden drank? He should have ordered Dogfish Head. Deleware, American, Delicious, Crafty. Biden could have made the craft beer statement here.
